Escuse me please!

"Excuse me please!" ,translate this to the local dialect which sounds something like this - "Abe hat samne se!".Welcome to the world which has molested the very existence of civic sense.I started my career in Bangalore where you find very civilised people, even the auto rickshaw driver knows English!People drive in their own lanes and wait patiently at the traffic lights.

Well all was good when destiny brought me to Delhi.

In this city no one has the least respect for traffic rules. No one has a

To bring about the contrast lemme just put forward an example.I am one those persons who are the favourites of Traffic Police.

In Bangalore when I used to get caught for any reason the traffic police would respond this way - "Sir you have to pay a fine of Rs 200/- for overspeeding."Such humbleness ,such respect even my juniors did not show this to me in college.I felt like giving away Rs 500/- instead.

In Delhi recently i got caught for speeding. This was the treatment meted out to me - "Ka ji,Amitabh Bachchan baniye ga ka!Teri ** **!Chal saale 200 Rs nikaal warna daal dunga andar!".

I am not promoting overspeeding or trying to gain sysmpathy out of you but just trying to potray the drastic change in attitude of people in the north compared to the southern part.

Lets go a little down.Lets take UP as an example.A smile certainly must have crossed your lips by the shear mention of the name. The other week I was in Lucknow.Beautiful city.Political dominance can be seen everywhere.Every second major road would be blocked by some rally or the other. The CM of the state has put her pics every 10m in the city.Probably someone should advise her to use Orkut. There 's lot s of space to store pics.Atleast the poor Lucknow'ites would be spared.

Anyways so I was in my cab heading towards Kanpur.A pretty chick was on the other side of the road.Compelled by nature just took my head outside to have a better glance.Just then a State Corporation bus passed by.I was suddenly welcomed with some fluid shower on my head.I realised someone had spiited from the bus!My beautiful vocabulary was exercised without delay. Then came the prompt reply from the other side - "Aaji hamar thook hai ,aap bachiye!"

Can you believe this! What a screwed up democracy.Immediately someone should spread awarness about article 19 A of our constituiton which talks about Fundamental Rights. No where has it been mentioned "You have the right to spit anywhere and everywhere within the boundaries of the State and the surrounding persons should take necessary steps to restrain from the same!".Either explain this to the people or atleast make an amedment to put it under the law.

So much said it draws me say even after so many years of independence we have not realised our rights.Infact the very fact that Fundamental Duties were drafted 27 years after the fundamental rights were made speaks volumes. We all know what our rigths are but none of us bother to abide by the fundamental duties.

Guys we have been granted freedom which cannot be even imagined in some of the fundamentalist states. So lets lets try to make this country a better place to live in.

  1. Get your fundamentals correct first...which law of which section asked you to nonchalantly take your head out of a running vehicle!!! Do you know you could have bashed your head? And all for a "pretty" chick in Kanpur!

Thank heavens that the man just spat on you...

  2. Its really nice buddy. gud observation from ur past experiences just like film " Slum dog Millionaire". oye i had no idea that u r such a gud Philosopher. I like the way of express your feelings and thought so easily.

"ab kya kari hamar UP or Bihar ma Sudhar hone ma tanik time lagi.... bus dekhat jao yi kab hui saka..."

  3. Avik...u observed well but the action taken by you is fruitless. All the protagonists that you want to change will never be reading this blog so writing blogs to change them is of no use. To create the awareness, one has to go to these masses in person and then bring about the change that you are looking for. Even for that Bangalorean policeman who so humbly asked you to pay fine accesses more than his radio, his mobile, and his television. Its is a practical problem and has to be tackled in practical grounds and never in a virtual arena...

BTW, hope you remember me. I am Bapi Mahanta from our very own SPS.

  4. Well avik first of all...."Excuse Me" does not hold the meaning which you have expressed. Rather it means "Kshhama kariye" in Hindi or "khoma Korben" in bengali which in Kolkata we commonly use as "Ektu dekhi dada".

Again apart from the nasty experience you encountered while "over speeding" - the accent might be a local way of speaking. It depends on where you are to understand whether the tone is rough or that's the general tone of the people. After spending 4 glorious years of your life in Eastern UP, I think you can expect that from the Traffic Police especially when you had committed an offence. You can thank your stars that you were alone and there weren't any "moral police" around.....

I totally agree that people in Bangalore are really polite but traffic has become worse here. Now even footpaths are not safe for walking.

  9. First let me congratulate you for the unknowlegable blog...kudos!!! You portray yourself at the zenith of hypocrisy when you say "lets lets try to make this country a better place to live in" with undue emphasis on "LETS" which seem to mean that you include yourself in the Nation building process!!! Seemingly you need to enrich yourself with a bit of sociology and a whole lot of the Indian Constitution. For the sociological and economic part, you seem to propagate regional differences when you seem so gala about the north-south dilemma. The Indian Constitution provides for "Single Citizenship" and to eliminate regional differences is itself specified in the "Fundamental Duties" you wrote rather unknowingly[Art 51A, clauses ii, iii, v, vi]. Also, something like article 19A is non existent unless you intend to amend the Constitution itself!!!...its Art 19, clause 1, sub-clause (a)….and that to is “right to freedom of speech and expression”….neither of you spoke and he expressed himself in the form of “spitting on you” [for some help refer to reasonable restrictions on fundamental rights] ; one wonders how it is applicable in the case you mentioned!!! And here comes the big one....the fundamental rights cannot be amended practically. They occupy a "transcendental" position in the Constitution [SC verdict, Golaknath vs State of Punjab Case, 1967]....further amplifies in the SC verdict of Keshavananda vs State of Kerala Case (1973) in the form of "Doctrine of Basic Features". In addition, the auto driver knowing English is not a Constitutional command…..Art 351 of the Indian Constitution directs the State to promote Hindi as a medium of communication. With yourself over speeding and waving your head outside the window, you hamper Motor Vehicles Act (Sec 183, Sec 177, Rule 37(1)) . Get a chill pill. Try to be the change you want to see in the world!!!….Take care…..
